Iconic and legendary actor Peter O’ Toole has decided to call it quits and retire from the acting business.

Acting since 1956, O’ Toole cemented his place in cinema history when he portrayed T.E. Lawrence in Daivd Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

When asked about his retirement, O’ Toole had this to say, “It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back.” O’ Toole, who is 79 years old now, said in a statment to a New York publicist, Bill Augustine, that he is ready part ways with show business and relax.

In the statment, O’ Toole said that his career “has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I’ve shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits. However, it’s my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one’s stay.”

Peter O’Toole concluded the statement by saying, “I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell.”
